3Good idea and OK, but not very effecient
By Tom
The cooler works mostly as advertised. Hopefully the fowling information will explain this.
1) The cooler arrive ahead of the reported time; very nice!
2) The cooler took about 3.5 to 4 hours to cool the inside to about 40 degrees F in a room that was about 73-74 degrees F using the supplied home power adapter.
3) After about a half hour or less the temperature close to cooling vents dropped to about 35-34 degrees F. The opposite wall of the cooler from the cooling vents was much the same.
4) After putting cold food and milk in the cooler and leaving it closed for about 30-45 minutes the far wall area of the cooler from the cooling vents rose to about 38-40 degrees F and the cooling vent end remained with in a degree or two of the empty reading. As I used it through the next two days it remained about the same temp at both ends. Unplugging it and waiting for about an hour and a half the temp rose to about 58-60 degrees. The room temp stayed very close to the same temp all this time.
5) The temp of the air from the outside fan was about 80 degrees at the times the unit was on.
6) Powering the cooler with batteries works the same as with the ac adapter that came with the unit as long as the the battery voltage stayed with in the range given in the manual. I used the two 145 amp hour deep cycle 12 volt batteries I used with power inverter to run my TV and refrigerator intermittently when the power goes out.
It lasted about 24-36 hours on the two batteries, but then they were not fully charged, however I don't think they were very far from full charge though.
7) Changing the side the lid/door opening is very easy just follow the directions in the manual. The cooler is made about the same as the ice coolers and I found that they gain heat about the same as this Thermoelectric cooler.
Maybe it is just the cooler I received, but thinking about some of the other reviews it maybe with in the norms of this model cooler.

> Suggestion: if you use the cooler like an ice type cooler put the vented tray on the 'top' side of the slots close to the cooling vents. Also put some thing about a 1/4-1 inch thick on the bottom of the cooler under the tray so air can circulate from the bottom vents of the cooling fan cover
( see picture). Also I put two 'cold packs' (not ice) to help hold the tray in place as it is on the outside of the slots that hold the tray. Also as an added benefit they help keep that end cool. The vents are only at the top of the cooling fan cover on the side where the cold pacts are so they don't block any air flow and the raised try lets air flow at the bottom. The tray prevents object from completely blocking the front air vent even if covered as the air would tend to be forced over the top and then under the space created by the slightly raise tray. Be careful not to raise the try too high as it would hold the lid open and even if it did not it would block the air flow over the top edge of the tray.

>Conclusion: It is a good thing to take on road trips and for people who travel on the road for a living. hotels, remote, cabins, etc.
Just like most home refrigerators if used like a mini fridge when the door opens, some if not all the cold air fall out into the room.
it would be nice as other reviewers have said if there was a thermostat to at least shut the unit off when the temp was about 40
degrees or less and then when it rose a few degrees turn it on as this would save some on a battery if used.
If the cooler is used at a camp site with a battery I would recommend at least 100 watt solar panel as in full sun light they produce
about 5 amps. A 150 watts solar panel would be better so that if it is cloudy there would be enough current to help run the cooler and when sunny it run help run the cooler and charge the battery.
You could power it from a generator, but then you could just use a mini fridge. Also you have the noise of
the generator and gas to contend with.
>>>Update 5/31/2015 > The the ac adapter stopped working. Returning the cooler as the cooler might be defective or the ac adapter might have damaged the the cooler.

3Does not include the 120v adapter. BEWARE
By djhaase
Item description says it includes both 120v and 12v adapters. False and misleading. My package only included 12v adapter.

Reading the Q&As sounds like some people receive a package with both and some people only receive the 12v adapter. What is up with that?

The exterior of the box says the 120v adapter must be purchased separately. Amazon sells it for $17. Of course the exterior of the box says it is both a chiller and heater. As do the instructions. However my unit is clearly only the chiller, since it does not have the cable that you reverse. So Coleman did not put the correct unit in the box.

5If your a Professional Driver (Trucker) This will fit in the cubbyhole behind your seat.
By Jim Phillips
Wow this worked out well. After the unit got chilled it cooled down beverages I had left in the sun. And kept my food cold as well. The plastic door works really well too and can be reversed and used as a drink holder. All in all very quality unit. The cord on it was fairly long as well.
